Honoring a Tobacco Prevention Champion: Heather Smith Named 2025 TFP Member of the Year
May 9, 2025
As we reflect on the impactful work of the Tobacco Free Partnership of DeSoto County over the past year, we are proud to recognize one of our dedicated and passionate partners. This year, we are honored to name Heather Smith, Community Program Administrator at the Florida Department of Health in DeSoto County, as our 2025 Tobacco Free Partnership Member of the Year.
Heather Smith: A Tireless Advocate for Public Health
Heather has been an integral part of the Tobacco Free Partnership for many years, consistently demonstrating a deep commitment to protecting youth and promoting tobacco-free environments across DeSoto County. Her collaborative leadership has played a vital role in the success of numerous local initiatives.
Over the years, Heather has been a key player in conducting point-of-sale surveillance activities, helping identify and counteract tobacco marketing tactics aimed at youth. Her work has brought attention to how advertising, flavored products, and product placement make it easier for young people to start using tobacco. Her advocacy has elevated this critical issue, helping to align local efforts with statewide public health priorities.
In addition to her fieldwork, Heather is a trusted voice in the community. She often represents the partnership at meetings and events, raising awareness of local efforts and sharing best practices with community leaders and residents. She has also been instrumental in supporting our Hidden in Plain Sight trailer, providing valuable insight and educational materials that help parents recognize signs of substance use in teens.
A Valued Partner and Community Leader
“Heather’s unwavering support, dedication, and passion for public health make her an indispensable member of our team. She is always willing to lend her expertise, share resources, and champion new ideas that advance our mission. Whether in the field, behind the scenes, or at the podium, Heather leads with integrity and heart.”
